Lies, Damned Lies and Fracking

Postby Shadowgirlau » Tue Jun 24, 2014 6:12 pm

This is from a book I have just read by? Phillip Doe and is published by Chelsea Green Publishing whose catch cry is that they are bringing the politics and practice of sustainable living to the world. The synopsis reads like -

Peak oil? Bah! Fracking will save us and keep us energy independent for centuries – right? Wrong.

In Snake Oil: How Fracking’s False Promise of Plenty Imperils Our Future — now available through Chelsea Green — Post Carbon Institute’s senior fellow Richard Heinberg explains in detail how and why the oil and gas industry – aided and abetted by allies in the government and on Wall Street – are selling us a pack of lies when it comes to the promise of fracking.
Heinberg systematically debunks the snake oil sales pitches ...

The book was quite a good read and certainly makes one think not only about the pros and cons of even undertaking fracking but also the outcome to the delicate balance in our ecological systems let alone to ourselves. In this books conclusion we are more or less the victims of companies (and governments) self interst for short term monetary gains which will ultimately spell disaster for the current generation and those to come. I do admit that at times the book seem long winded or maybe repertive even but just the same I found it enlightening.

It is just a pity that we don't have a rule which says the public must be educated in various outcomes before decisions are made that affect both our lives and the environment too.

Well now I have gotten my social and political justice fix; I am ready to read/look through something lighter so having recently receive d a book as a gift (which I absolutely love) it is time to turn my attention to "Bake" and something lighter.
If you are interested in social politics though; by all means seek this book out from your library, I did.

Hi Kathleen,

This is an issue close to me, and has been for a few years, one of the reason that I've been absent. ;)

Where I live in the Northern Rivers of NSW we have worked hard to hear our voices heard against this invasive industry, a group of women was started called 'The Knitting Nannas' and each week that sit outside the local politicians asking to be represented.

Door to door polls have shown over 80% and in many cases well over 90% do not was CSG or Gas in our region, some have gone to Queensland to see the destruction and listen to the people affected and still our government support the mining companies and give them billions in subsidies for coal and gas.

We want a renewable future and want to start now. In my region we have many people living off grid and many took up solar roof panels and continue.

Still governments won't listen, but do you know what, when groups of Knitting Nannas are popping up all over the country and the world and are polite but know their stuff and so many are opposed people just wait for elections. Our State Election is here at the end of March, we saw what Queensland thought of their government supporting mining, let's see if NSW does the same.

My DH says you can't get over 80% of people to agree with anything, even that the sun rises in the east. Yep I know it doesn't in WA.

Unfortunately Vicki the mighty dollar talks louder then any protestor and with the changes the pollies are considering bringing in it could become illegal to protest at all. Seems like we are returning to the dark ages? well in many ways. :?
