Russia to ban meat imports from several Australian suppliers from July10
MOSCOW. July 6 (Interfax) - Russia will ban meat imports from a number of enterprises in Australia effective July 10 and import of all kangaroo meat from August 1 due to violations of food safety standards.
The July 10 import ban applies to pork and pork products from three Australian enterprises (822, 3173 and 7170) and beef, pork and "the meat of small, horned livestock" from one enterprise (201).
As for the ban on import of kangaroo meat, food safety violations in those shipments have become systemic in nature recently, Rosselkhoznadzor spokesman Alexei Alekseenko said. At least one shipment was found to contain E.coli bacteria.
Most of the kangaroo meat imported to Russia undergoes industrial processing.
Russia also added 27 Argentine enterprises to the list of authorized meat suppliers. "Having accepted the guarantee of Argentina's veterinary service, Rosselkhoznadzor has deemed it possible to expand the list of Argentine meat enterprises authorized to export product to
the Russian market by 27," the food safety watchdog said in a statement.

For anyone interested in saving our kangaroos now is the time to write to the Chinese Consulates to tell them we don't want them eating our Kangaroos. Once China begins importing, the Kangaroo meat industry have already said they can't keep up with demand so it will harken the end to our beautiful Kangaroos.
I know if I had kids I'd like a future where they saw these beautiful animals in the abundance and wild.

Can I ask, how is eating Kangaroo any different to eating beautiful cows? Or beautiful pheasants? Beautiful wild caught salmon? Or chickens, lamb ... or any other animal that is eaten. All of them are beautiful and native to somewhere.

There are many reasons, a question I also ask is why can't we eat whale, what's the difference?
Okay here's a few reasons not:
* Many people believe that kangaroos are farmed, they aren't - they are still shot in the night in the wild. Once upon a time only male kangaroos were shot and the species had a chance of survival, then we decided it was interesting and the in thing to eat them.
* The mothers are shot, not always the legislated head shot, the joey at foot that still needs it's mother is either shot or left to predators, the joey in pouch is taken out and either it's head is stomped on to kill it or it's slammed against the bumper bar or a tree to kill it.
* Kangaroos can and do carry toxoplasmosis, which if contracted during pregnancy gives gross problems to the foetus (a woman at a work function about 6 years back had this happen via a cracker with kangaroo meat).
* Because of the unhygienic conditions of killing the meat has been found to contain ecoli, hence Russia no longer taking certain of our meats. Meat processors who process both kangaroo and beef can and do get cross contamination.
* The number of eastern grey, western grey, red and wallaroo kangaroos by the governments reports have dramatically plummeted. And many areas don't have any kangaroos any more. In fact many of the kangaroo shooters are now giving Animal Liberation information in a bid to reduce the killing because they can't make a living. Adidas complain that the skins are too small now, and the reason is that a male kangaroo with a life span to approx 22 years now only lives to about 2 years (not great for the gene pool).
* While the number killed each year grows and if we supply China (and other countries) with meat, we will wipe out our kangaroos.
* If I was young and had children I wouldn't want the only place to see a kangaroo on our money, our coat of arms and possible the oddity in the zoo while they try artificial breeding plans.
*The kangaroo is a sentient being (This means they are capable of being aware of sensations and emotions, of feeling pain and suffering, and of experiencing a state of well being. [from animal liberation front])
Now with beef, lamb, pork:
* Domestically bred for thousands of years to eat
* Humanely killed and stringent rules in place in most (not all) abattoirs in this country
* Hygenic premises
* Tested to ensure no contaminates (especially following the BSE)
And with the wild game such as pheasants and salmon:
* If they're killed by a hunter to eat then it's usually not destroying the entire species, if they were killed in such gross numbers and so cruelly then I would stand up and say stop to this as well.
If an indigenous person living in the outback killed a kangaroo the entire family eat that one animal, it's not where thousands are killed in the night and they see their babies killed in front of them. I know I'm not having my steers killed in front of their family.
I live in a no kill area, people still shoot the kangaroos for dogs meat. Most of Australia is a kill area and they are opening more due to the lack of animals in so many areas.
I always saw kangaroos in the Northern Rivers area, I haven't seen one kangaroo (other than a small mob I released about 5 years ago, who visit each year), in the bush, or road kill in about two years. We drove all the way from Casino to Tenterfield not one road kill and I did see a fully grown female with an at foot joey alone in the bush in Tenterfield. Kangaroos aren't normally found in ones! Where are they?? People in many areas are seeing the same thing.

The Tasmanian Tiger was hunted to extinction through government bounties, because farmers said they were killing stock (incorrectly now they have found). The Koala was almost hunted to extinction (government endorsed) and is now only hanging on by a thread. So if we kill our kangaroos to extinction, I imagine the wallabies are next and so it goes.
Don't people want their children to see these animals in our country in the future?
I hope I've answered some questions for you Jo, there is so much information and mis-information on the subject and my fear is they'll be gone or severely effected (by gene pool) to continue and when it's too late, it's too late... and sometimes it makes me sad, devastated or just plain angry.

Hmmm.
I come from a completely different perspective - from a wheat farm where kangaroos are in such abundance that in many years they severely impacted the crops, fences, and as a result my Dad's ability to provide for the family. No, of course it is not all down to the roos - but in marginal and drought years they would wipe out what little there was.
And secondly, working in the mining industry, the numbers flourish enormously because they now have access to all year round water supplies in arid regions where it was not previously available. I remember on return trip from a neighbouring mine site, where the bus pottered along at 50, 60 km/h and hit 15 roos in one hour, and there were carcasses left from trucks about every 50 metres, there were so many on the road it was incredible.
I was under the impression that Kangaroo numbers since european settlement had increased significantly with the whole farming thing - more food, more water, more resources available for the kangaroo population. (Realistically I suppose there is no way of measuring this at all, anecdotes from early settlers are hardly quantifiable) More pressure on the remaining natural environment as a result, just as with farming for food. Just as there is an enormous impact on the natural environment for every single thing humans eat, meat or vegetable. I may be wrong, but I thought the current level of Kangaroo 'harvesting' is done by managed and periodically reviewed quotas.
A bullet in the head is no different to a shock or whatever other method is used at the abbattoir. The end result is a dead animal no matter which method. Regardless of whether it was killed in a long line of other animals marching through the abbattoir door, or in the wild, or in a huge net dragged from the ocean and suffocating or being thrown into a freezer. (Nope, I don't eat fish, unless I caught it myself)
If we are going to say we should not kill Kangaroos for food, then we should also say we should not kill any other animal at all for food. Cows, sheep, all the other animals we eat are also sentient beings. Nor then should we keep pets that eat meat - or keep pets at all.
Unless people stop eating altogether - not just meat but anything farmed, grown, or caught... then there is a theoretical case, from a humanitarian or environmental perspective, against every single food item ever consumed.
The key is the sustainable management. I don't disagree with killing managed numbers of kangaroos for meat any more than I do fishing, or farming other animals for meat, or farming grains or vegetables, if it is done in as efficient and least damaging manner as economically possible.
With Japan, Norway etc with the whales, one of the major issues (at least from my point of view) is that the whales don't live in Japan, they are not just killing their own resources...and that they claim it is for scientific purposes when they've never released any research papers! We are not killing kangaroos in international waters and claiming it is for research.
The world is not going to get to a point in our lifetimes where animals are not eaten, hence we need to manage the resources sustainably, which is what (the governement) is trying to do. And of course ensure the continuing survival of the species in the wild. Its hardly too late now, and I currently don't see that the powers that be in this country would ever let it get that way.
If the issues are with the processing and killing methods, well thats a different story altogether... and it should be quality controlled as with any other meat industry, or food processing industry of any nature for that matter.
Funny this coming from Russia, they hunt brown bears for sport, for their gall bladders and meat, with the cubs being sold into circuses, or abandoned. Wonder how the processing methods compare there?

Thrown on top (whole) of an electric stove and all four elements turned on, and the roo flipped over once or twice, and left until thouroughly well done. Not so light: The killing methods used are a whole lot more brutal than a bullet or a knock on a bullbar.

Sustainability is the fundamental problem, and reports show it's far from sustainable these days.
There's been quite a lot of research to also show the thinking of farmers, that they've provided water and food, so there's more kangaroos since white settlement is not valid at all. How can we have more kangaroos with so much less habitat?
Kangaroos stop breeding in drought, and they're selective eaters, many farmers say they eat the all the grasses and the roots and kill the land, another one that's proved invalid. When running sheep in drought you can't say kangaroos are eating everything, just doesn't happen.
The difference is where a group of men go through the bush spotlighting and shooting roos, 'not always through the head', some are hung up and slit open while still alive and thrown on to the back of a dirty ute then taken to a dirty 'so called chiller' in the hot Aussie outback where by the time they get to the meat processing plant they are maggot invested and taking 'farm' animals to an abbatoir and having them killed with a shock to the head. Home kills also don't want their animals stressed before or during the killing either, due to the impact on the meat.
I personally would like to see a future for our wildlife, which is found no-where else in our world. I choose to eat meat and I intend to grow it myself to try an make sure it's all done with the animals interests at heart.
As time goes on, the thing that amazes me more every day is the attitude so many people seem to have, that it's okay to kill all our wildlife because there's so many and who cares. As a person without children and not about to have them, I hoped that the younger generations breeding the future generations would want to see things differently... sadly I've yet to see the case. I despair of the future for these generations where a lack of compassion and greed rules. I have times of asking myself why I care, I won't be here for that much longer and thank god I've brought no-one into this world to see where it's heading.
