I just put this up on the dexter forum and thought it's a good idea for here too.
I realise for some you already do this but it's worth saying, that when you get livestock or in fact any animals, it's a really good idea to get a rapport with your vet.
Call in and ask the odd question, don't waste their time but let them get to know you and you them. When there's an emergency you want them to know exactly who you are and what you can and can't do yourself.
I buy my cat worming pills from the vet and other ins and outs at times, and don't hesitate to drop in and say hi and ask a question.
I'm late seeing one of mine with Fatimas Birthday Card... he's the vet that saved her Mum and helped with her... I did a card with her photo saying 'thank you for saving me and my Mum' put a magnet on the back and he always tells me he has it on his fridge. They all ask about Fatima, because I kept them up to date.
Some weeks back I was there with my Mum and her dog, and everyone was 'we were only saying where's Vicki, and how's Fatima'. They wanted the dog to stay (tick paralysis) but because they know us we stayed with her and took her home early as he knew she'd be cared for correctly.
So a relationship with a vet I've always considered a vital thing in owning an animal, so people 'Get to know your Vet'
ask them how they're going on what's happening in the area. They'll know if there's a lot of 3 day sickness for instance or black leg etc etc...
